COMPETITION SUMMARY

The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden has teamed up with the Dallas chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the Construction Association in North Texas and East Texas (TEXO), to coordinate the 2011 Fairytale Castle Playhouse Exhibition. This design competition, sponsored by the Dallas Arboretum, is supported by committees within the AIA Dallas and TEXO, the Young Architects Forum (YAF) and the Young Constructors Council (YCC).

The overall purpose of this competition is to provide creative and imaginative playhouse castles taken from classic children’s literacy, set in the beautiful landscape of the Dallas Arboretum.

The competition will be open to all 1) State of Texas Registered Architects, 2) Interior Designers, 3) Landscape Architects, 4) Members of the Construction Industry, 5) Architectural Interns, 6) Architectural students enrolled in an accredited Texas University Architecture, Landscape Architecture or Interior Design program, and 7) Engineering or Construction Science students enrolled in an accredited Texas University.

All of the entries submitted (whether by a team or an individual) will need to include as a partner a TEXO-YCC member. The purpose is to encourage collaboration between the design professionals and the construction industry, with a design-build approach in mind.
Entries submitted will be evaluated based on the following criteria: 1) Aesthetics/Design Appropriateness, 2) Durability, 3) Safety, 4) Sustainability, 5) Constructability and Site Logistics.

A maximum of eight (8) winning entries will be selected to be built and in place at pre-selected sites within the Dallas Arboretum’s grounds for a period of ten months. The exhibit will be the feature of Dallas Blooms spring festival as well as Summer at the Arboretum, Autumn at the Arboretum and Holiday at the Arboretum festivals.
